A Sydney textile and wallpaper manufacturer won the 2009 New South Wales Telstra Business Award last night.
Publisher Textiles, a strong Australian brand offering local handmade, high quality designs, was declared the winner at a glittering awards dinner at the Westin.
Telstra Business Group managing director Deena Shiff, said Publisher was an excellent example of how a niche business could succeed. “Publisher are thriving despite the unpredictable nature of the fashion market and fast developing a name for themselves.”
The company, which designed the bespoke wallpaper for Neil Perry’s Rockpool restaurant, also took out the businessowner Micro-Business category. Other NSW category winners were Unimail Pty Ltd (MYOB Small Business Award), Financial Management Solutions (Sensis Social Responsibility Award) and Kimberley Kampers, which won both the Panasonic Australia Medium Business Award and the AMP Innovation Award.
Joint founder of Publisher Textiles, Rhynie Cawood, said the business started even smaller than it still is, from a rented corner in a friend’s factory. Together with her partner, Mark Cawood, the pair created original printed fabrics and garments during the week and sold them at Sydney market stalls over the weekend. Commissions from Sydney designers Akira Isagowa and Nicola Finetti soon followed.
