Criminals have found newer and more sophisticated ways to steal credit card information, using new technology to scan credit card chips from up to a metre away and use the details to rip off cardholders, reports news.com.au.
The chips used in credit cards can also be found in passports, cards and security swipe cards used to access buildings, leaving cardholders victims of identity fraud without their knowledge.
Head of the Queensland fraud squad, Brian Hay said the new technology showed how cyber-criminals were using more sophisticated methods to try to gather as much information as possible about a person.
Police from 22 countries heard about the technology from senior members of the FBI during a closed international policing conference on the Gold Coast this week.
