A new study has revealed poor health can significantly impact employment by preventing one in every two sick Australians from working.
The Healthy, Wealthy and Wise report by AMP found health was the third most important factor in keeping Australians out of the workforce, following childcare and home duties and retirement.
Managing director, Craig Meller said the financial implications of ill health are significant. He added the report reflects that “poor health can limit people’s ability to work and earn, to the detriment of their financial wellbeing and also that of their family.”
The report found 82 percent of those with good health were holding down jobs, while those who suffered regular ill health only recorded 26 percent employment. Unhealthy workers also earned on average $330 less than healthy workers.
When broken down by state, Victoria was found to be the healthiest state with an average of 86 percent saying they were in good health.
