Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has urged business leaders to be more charitable and not to cut down on corporate philanthropy during the economic downturn.
At the Australian Davos Connection’s Philanthropy Summit in Sydney over the weekend, Mr Rudd said corporate charity would help to boost the economy along with aiding struggling communities.
“There is unfolding a contraction in corporate philanthropy….my appeal to corporate Australia is, wherever it is possible, not to cut back.
“When you have the government, the community and the corporate sector acting creatively together you actually end up, often, producing a much better service, a much more creative service, and one much more tailored to local communities.”
Chairman of the Australian Davos Foundation, Michael Roux, has echoed Mr Rudd’s sentiments believing that if businesses stopped donating to charities then the public’s trust in corporate Australia would be “eroded.”
“A drop in philanthropic support would destroy what little trust the public retains in corporate Australia.”
