Four out of five small businesses are not ready for the new workplace laws to take effect on 1 July, according to the AMR Interactive research report, commissioned by Telstra Business.
The research revealed that 45 percent of small businesses were either unprepared or uncertain about the changes to IR laws and their potential impact.
Workforce Guardian Managing Director, Adrienne Unkovich, has urged small businesses to seek advice and information if they are unsure about their obligations under the new laws.
“With unfair dismissal rules coming into effect from 1 July, and national employment standards and modern awards from 1 January next year, time poor and resource constrained small businesses are best advised to automate their HR processes as quickly as possible or seek advice from their business advisor” she said.
“While most SMEs are aware the laws are changing, most are struggling with what the changes mean for their business and how they can manage the risk given that fines and remedies are the same for small business as for big business.”
In order to help small business manage their day-to-day processes more efficiently, Telstra has launched a new online software service T-Suite®, which features an employment management service called Workforce Guardian®.
This will enable small businesses to generate employment agreements and manage hiring, performance and termination issues. (Read all about it here).
