The three founders of gaming start-up Rovio, responsible for creating the Angry Birds smartphone game, have announced their product has been downloaded half a billion times, making it one of the most downloaded games in history.
Rovio, a start-up founded in 2003 after three students won a Nokia/Hewlett-Packard developers competition, said that fans around the world have played 200,000 years of Angry Birds, with 300 million minutes played daily.
More than 266 billion levels of Angry Birds have been played, with 400 billion birds launched into action, and over 44 billion Stars collected in the process.
According to Rovio CEO Mikael Hed, the company are “delighted” to see so many people around the world get involved with their game.
“We remain committed to creating more fun experiences and bringing exceptional quality to Angry Birds Fans everywhere.”
The Angry Birds gaming franchise consists of the games Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio, and Rovio is about to open the first official Angry Birds retail shop in Helsinki to capitalise on the demand for toys, merchandise and books.
Earlier this year, Rovio acquired an animation studio based in Helsinki, Finland, and the company is moving forward with cartoon productions.
