LinkedIn has found significant differences between men and women when it comes to online professional networking, with data showing that both globally and locally, men tend to be savvier online networkers than their female counterparts.
LinkedIn data uncovered a global trend in which men are better online networkers in some traditionally female dominated industries, and vice versa. This was not the case in Australia however, where data showed both men and women were savvy online networkers in industries their genders traditionally dominate.
According to LinkedIn, the top Australian industries where women are savvier online professional networkers are:
- Alternative dispute resolution
- Writing and editing
- Philanthropy
- Marketing & advertising
And the top Australian industries where men are better online networkers are:
- Military
- Capital markets
- Human resources
- Newspapers
LinkedIn ANZ Managing Director Cliff Rosenberg said networking experiences can be quite different for men and women – even at the same event, within the same organisation, or in the same industry or community
“Some professionals may find networking in person to be tedious or intimidating and any such barriers can be removed in an online environment. LinkedIn provides the best platform and tools to cultivate their networking skills and build strong professional connections,” he said.
In addition to reviewing the savviest networkers by industry, LinkedIn looked at some of the largest companies in Australia and ranked them in its “Battle of the Sexes” online professional networking savviness scale.
