Despite news that the stimulus handouts have helped boost spending in the retail sector, 6,400 jobs were still lost in the three months to May.
The ABS labour force figures for the May quarter reveal that 12,400 full-time jobs were lost whilst 6,000 part-time jobs were created.
ANRA CEO Margy Osmond said that while the Government’s first stimulus handouts helped the retail sector, they are yet to see definite numbers from the second handout.
“The first cash handouts, combined with interest rate cuts and Christmas, helped boost retail jobs by 11,000 between November 2008 and February 2009 (8,400 of these jobs were part-time).
“Unfortunately, we have yet to see the same jobs effect following the second stimulus package.”
