Android is now the top operating platform in the US, according to a report issued by industry observer comScore. Coming in second was Research in Motion (makers of the Blackberry platform), and in third place, Apple iPhones.
It’s the first time Android has taken the top spot, and may surprise Australians, many of whom still have a huge crush on the iPhone.
The study revealed that for the three months to January 2011, 31.2 percent of the smartphone market share was held by Android, RIM (Blackberry) had 30.4 percent of the market, followed by Apple with 24.7 percent. Microsoft came in at eight percent and Palm held 3.2 percent of the market.
The top handset manufacturer was Samsung, with 24.9 percent of the US market, with LG (20.8 percent) then Motorola (16.5 percent), coming in second and third. Seven percent of handsets were by Apple.
