The Good Guys Capabala, Queensland has implemented a new ‘tradeit’ policy to help combat Australia’s growing eWaste problem.
As part of the program, customers can bring in their old, outdated technology and exchange it for store credit.
The move reflects a growing trend amongst Australian businesses to adopt more environmentally viable trade practices, as problems such as waste are developing into very real crises.
Since beginning the scheme in October 2009 more than 15 tonnes of old technology has been collected by the retailer, showing that people are willing to get behind the initiative.
Materials in old cameras, computers mobile phones and game consoles are subsequently recycled as opposed to simply being thrown into landfill.
Waste is becoming an increasing dilemma in Australia, as diminished landfill availability is forcing both the government as well as businesses to invest in more sustainable practices and technologies.
Good Guys Capalaba Proprietor James Brockhurst believes that embracing this concept is one way that people can protect the environment in a meaningful way.
“By providing an incentive to trade in older technology, we have been able to get the message out about what can be done with old or unwanted appliances, and at the same time encourage people to upgrade to more energy efficient models.
“When it comes to sustainable solutions, we can all play our part. By making simple changes we can reduce our carbon footprint and make a positive impact on the environment.
“eWaste will be a very topical issue over the coming months and we are just proud to be doing our bit here in Redland Shire to combat the issue. As a retailer of these goods, we feel we have our part to play.”
