Twitter, the American microblogging and social networking platform, has confirmed that it is developing a feature that will allow users to edit tweets after they have been posted.
Interestingly, the announcement comes just days after Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk revealed a 9.2 per cent stake in Twitter and polled his followers on whether they wanted the feature.
The poll has prompted people to share various responses. It has also received a reply from Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal who wrote, “The consequences of this poll will be important. Please vote carefully.”
In a separate tweet, Twitter’s communications team denied that the move was related to Mr Musk’s poll.
According to the company, the edit function has been one of the most requested features among Twitter users for some time.
“We’ve been exploring how to build an Edit feature in a safe manner since last year and plan to begin testing it within @TwitterBlue Labs in the coming months,” Twitter’s head of consumer product Jay Sullivan said.
“Edit has been the most requested Twitter feature for many years. People want to be able to fix (sometimes embarrassing) mistakes, typos and hot take at the moment. They currently work around this by deleting and tweeting again.
“Without things like time limits, controls, and transparency about what has been edited, Edit could be misused to alter the record of the public conversation. Protecting the integrity of that public conversation is our top priority when we approach this work.
“This is just one feature we are exploring as we work to give people more choice and control over their Twitter experience, foster a healthy conversation, and help people be more comfortable on Twitter. These are the things that motivate us every day.”
Twitter recently announced the appointment of Tesla’s CEO to its board of directors. Meanwhile, users on other major social media platforms such as Facebook, Linkedin, and Instagram can edit their posts.
Twitter Shops
In addition to this, Twitter recently launched Twitter shops. Merchants can handpick a collection of up to 50 products to showcase to Twitter shoppers using Twitter Shops.
The free feature allows people to view products from their favourite brands’ profiles, so when you talk about and discover products on the timeline, you can now browse them on Twitter as well.
“When you go to the profile of a merchant that has Twitter Shops enabled, you’ll see a “View shop” button just above their Tweets. When you tap the button, it will open up that merchant’s shop, where you can scroll through items.
“When you’re ready to purchase, you can click on the product of your choice which will open an in-app browser where you can learn more about the product and checkout on the merchant’s website,” Twitter said in a statement.
Twitter Shops is currently available to a limited number of merchants and managed partners in the United States. For the time being, people in the United States using Twitter in English on iPhones will be able to view and interact with Twitter Shops.
