A new survey has found that the majority of Australians believe the worst of the global financial crisis is over and the economy is starting to improve.
The Essential Media survey found that 52 percent of participants believe the worst of the crisis is over, while 31 percent thought that Australia’s economy would get worse.
In a surprising show of support for the government, 63 percent of labour votes were upbeat about the future of the Australian economy, while only 52 percent of coalition voters believed this to be the case.
In a similar report conducted by Access Economics, Australian mums have steered the nation through the worst phase of the global economic crisis, by spending up big in retail outlets. The average Aussie family spent six percent more at shopping malls in the June quarter, than when the crisis hit last September.
Access Economics director Chris Richardson said that we have “spent our way through the most dangerous spell in the global economy in 60 years” and that we are “through the worst.”
