Horticultural agency Plants Management Australia (PMA) was named Tasmanian Business of the Year earlier this week at the 2011 Telstra Tasmanian Business Awards, also taking home the Business Owner Micro-Business Award and the AMP Innovation Award.
Established in 1992, PMA manages the licensing and marketing of individual plant breeders’ new varieties of perennials, ornamental trees, and Australian natives to nurseries and grower networks throughout the global horticultural industry.
Judges singled out PMA for its dedication to clients and its expertise securing plant intellectual property, importing tissue culture, co-ordinating overseas trials and outstanding marketing.
According to PMA Director Chris Sargent, the company takes plants “from concept to consumer” and help maximise royalties for the plant breeder. It boasts 150 plants in the market and 100 in commercial trials.
Other winners of the Telstra Tasmanian Business Awards were:
- MYOB Small Business Award: Tas Petroleum.
- Yellow Pages Social Responsibility Award: Tasmanian Wing Chun Academy Ulverstone
- Telstra Regional Business Award: M & J Baker Farms Pty Ltd
- The BlackBerry People’s Choice Award: Kidz Bizzzz Indoor Play Centre and Café.
The national Telstra Business Awards will be held in Melbourne on 26 August, where the national winners of each category will be selected from among the state and territory winners. Winners will receive a share of $500,000 in cash and prizes and become part of an exclusive national business alumnus.
