In his address at the NSW Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Sydney yesterday, Rudd spoke of the financial crisis and the need for all Australians to work together to get through the downturn.
Small business owners were left unimpressed by his address, according to Sydney Morning Herald reports, with one business owner claiming the speech was “all spin and no substance.”
Mr Rudd’s strategy emphasised the need for organisations such as the IMF, RBA, Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Council of Small Business Organisations and the Housing Industry Association to support the Government’s stimulus package and work together to combat the economic crisis, whilst outlining the Government’s vision for small business in Australia.
Small business owners were disenchanted with the fact that they were unable to voice their opinion. One businessman Jack Goluzd, managing director of myspider.com.au, was angered that there was no Q&A section.
“I would have asked why there isn’t a financial stimulus package for small business.”
One small part of the Rudd Government’s $42 billion stimulus package, outlines a 30 cent-in-the-dollar investment tax break for small business for eligible assets costing $1,000 or more that they acquire from 13 December 2008, to 30 June 2009, in a measure totalling $2.7 billion.
It seems business owners are united in their stance on the stimulus package and believe that the Rudd Government should hold off on industrial reform until the economy recovers.
