The world of smartphones is being disrupted by Xiaomi, a Chinese company that has managed to break the record for the most smartphones sold on one platform – in a single day.
According to the company’s announcement released during its Mi Fan Fest, 2.11 million Xiaomi mobile phones were sold within 24 hours. This, of course, means big dollars. 2.08 billion Yuan in revenue was earned in that one day, which amounts to around $US 334 million.
The sales all took place via Xiaomi’s online sales platform, Mi.com.

Although Xiaomi has only been active for 5 years, it has fast gathered itself a reputation as the company biting at the heels of big companies like Apple and Samsung. Accusations of products being a little too similar to Apple have obviously have not affected sales.
An article by International Business Times in 2014 pointed at Apple’s lack of dominance in China and a wariness of potential backlash in the Chinese market as reasons Apple has not taken legal action for what some are considering to be copyright infringements. Xiaomi’s Guinness-sized move could see Apple pay more attention; time will tell.
Xiaomi does not currently have a sales base in either Australia or the U.S., its presence in the former abruptly cut short in August last year. Although no official expansion dates to these two sectors has yet been announced, it is expected that the company will be moving in shortly.
